The Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage and the Arab Democracy Foundation (ADF) will jointly organise the first Doha Freedom and Creativity Festival from April 9 to 12, said, Mohsen Marzouq and the festival general coordinator Marzouq al Basheer.
The ADF chairperson Mohsen Marzouq said the main objective of the festival is to create a free space for artists to express themselves. “‘We did not invite only famous artists to the festival. We also plan to showcase the young and new talents in the Arab world. We select different venues to reach out to the large public,” said Marzouq.
Answering a question about the modest participation of theatre in the festival, Marzouq al Basheer said, “‘A Tunisian group was supposed to present a show but apologised at the last moment. Instead, a Palestinian theatrical play that was planned for the Doha Cultural Festival will be shown during the Doha Freedom and Creativity Festival.” The festival will be inaugurated on April 9 at the National Theatre with two music shows. The first is a performance by al Qanawa, a folkloric gulf group and the second is Syrian singer Samih Shuqair and his band. A painting and photography exhibition of artists from Syria, Algeria, Lebanon and Qatar will also be organized.
Three seminars will also be held on the sidelines of the festival in Grand Regency hotel. The seminars will focus on Arab women’s creativity and requirements of freedom of expression. Renowned poets, writers and filmmakers will address the seminars
