On the first of two days athletics at the GCC championships in athletics, Qatar bagged medals in all colors. At Qatar Sports Club on Sunday the Qatari girls team started with a victory. Fatima Mazaher won the 100 metres hurdle event in supreme style, only momements later she was on the rostrum and all ready on the way for a full stadium lap. And again she won, coming form behind but with a strong finish grabbing the gold medal spot.

In the mean time Juti Jonardan won bronze medal of 100 meter dash. The fragile sprinter had a good start but could not her position till the end. In third place another young qatari sprinter....

Te robust Faitma Omer clinched a bronze medal showing raw potential in the shot put.

It was a close finish in the long jump, one of the stronger events on the first day. With the new jumping order after the third and fifth attempt is was nail biting for the the Qatari fans. But it was Qatar in the end who got the first place for Bahrain.

Score:
Qatar: 3 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze.
Bahrain got three gold medals: 100 metres, shot put and long jump.
The UAE clinched the rest of the medals: gold in javelin and silver in shot put.

Mrs. Ahlam Al Manea, President of Qatar Women Sport Committee ensured that the attendance of HH Sheikha Jawaher Bint Hamad Bin Suheim Al Thani, Consort of HH the Heir Apparent is an evident on the success of the championship. After the conclusion of the first day of GCC girls Athletics championship, President of Qatar women sport committee lauded the support Qatar Olympic committee to women sports.
