(c)GL2009 gerard lenting: lap of honour Qatari 800m runner
The Qatar team in athletics for girls under 16 closed the Gulf Championships here in Doha in style: with a win in the mix medley. In the overall medal count Qatar came second after Bahrain.
The second day GCCU16 competition went underway with the 200m and it showed a replay from the 100 metres. It was again the Bahraini girl who took first but with just a small margin to Juti Jonardan (Qatar)for taking silver. In third place again Nour Hussein Al Malki who took also bronze in the 100 meter sprint.
No wins for Qatar in the field events at the Qatar sports club stadium. In the discus throw where Bahrain, Kuwait and UAE got medals. Qatars Fayza Abdulnaser Omer was close to a win in the high jump but had to settle for second place based on count back. The win was for a Bahraini girl who also took first place in the triple. Here Qatar had to settle for bronze.
On the track Qatar booked another win in the 800 meters before the closing event. After a last minute change (one of the girls collapsed in warm up) it was all very close till the hand over. Then Juti Jonardan took the batton for QATAR and also took the lead. With a good run over the last 400 she could bring a nice win home.
