Doha athletics grand prix 2009

(C) GL2009 gerard lenting: aspire race in super GP Doha 2009

With more tahn a dozen world leads and some meet records on top proved the high quality meeting at the Qatar Super Grand Prix in Doha, on last Friday's (8) evening.

Again all eyes were on Blanka Vlasic of Croatia. Yet,again for another victory; 2.05m this time but also for her a world record 2.10m attempts.
Not really in the spot light was the mens shot put. With three giants over 21 metres:
Reese Hoffa toppled the Olympic champ, Tomascz Majewski, with 21.64m (twice!), to 21.13m and in third place Sultan Abdulmajeed Al-Hebshi from the kingdom of Saudi with a new arab-record 21.13m.

Of course my eyes were on the long jump. But Maurren Higa Maggi, the olympic champ, had no answer on the 'basic' US jumper Brettney Reese. Reese won with a new personal best a 6.99m leap, with Funmi Jimoh second on 6.96m. Maggi was only third with 6.90m.
So three girls over 6.90 and Naida Gomes a good 6.82 in fourth place.

In the heats ran former Aspire student Thamer Nassir a good 10.53 to gain some experience in a race with the big boys. In the warmup before the meet there were races for disabled and alse heats for girls and boys. In the boys race for Aspire students the winner was Zayd in 11.18sec.
