Al vóór de Spelen van Peking wist chef de mission Charles van Commenée dat hij sportkoepel NOC-NSF zou verlaten. Dus was het een stuk makkelijker genieten in China.

Gisteravond verliet CvC de persruimte op Schiphol (sinds zijn vorige week al uitgelekte afscheid -bbc-) waar door Sturk en Erica officieel werd bevestigd, met ogewekte tred. De Amsterdammer is sinds gisteren de nieuwe hoofdcoach van de Britse atletiek en werd gisterochtend gepresenteerd in de persruimte van Heathrow.

Zo was mijn goede vriend Charles dus de hoofdpersoon tijdens twee persconferenties.

Bij de ene, op Londen Heathrow, werd hij gepresenteerd als de messias en lachte hij zijn tanden bloot, in de ochtend. Bij de andere, op Schiphol, beet de Amsterdammer zes uur later bijna zijn tong af, 's middags. (volkskrant)

Van Commenee was top of UKA's list to replace Dave Collins after the role of performance director was scrapped in favour of a hands-on coaching position. The Dutchman guided Denise Lewis to heptathlon gold in Sydney in 2000 and Kelly Sotherton to bronze in Athens before taking over as performance director at the Netherlands Olympic Association. His reputation for straight-talking was cemented when he famously described Sotherton as a "wimp" for failing to win Olympic silver in 2004. (independent)

UK Athletics (UKA) today announced that Charles van Commenee has been appointed to the newly created role of Head Coach.
Van Commenee’s appointment is the conclusion of an extensive planning process led by UKA Chief Executive Niels de Vos to ensure the sport has the very best coaching expertise to enable British athletics to rise to the challenge of London 2012.
Van Commenee will oversee the UK Sport funded World Class Performance Programme, working alongside Britain’s top coaches and athletes as they head towards 2012.
