onrust

Eid Mubarak, let’s live up to the spirit

The Holy Month of Ramadan concluded yesterday in most of the Arab-Muslim world, including Qatar, and people are celebrating Eid Al Fitr today, while Muslims in other countries, including the world’s largest Muslim population in Indonesia, will celebrate the Eid tomorrow or day after (depending on the sighting of the moon).

Eid Al Fitr is the most important festival of Muslims, an occasion for faithful to express gratitude to God for giving them the opportunity to fulfil their obligation of fasting during the holy month and for the bounty He has bestowed humankind. It is forbidden to fast on the day of Eid because it is a day of thanksgiving, worship, brotherhood and solidarity.

Eid festivities begin with early morning prayers at mosques and special prayergrounds. Qatar has made enormous arrangements to celebrate Eid. But while celebrating we must not forget the significance of the occasion. Eid Al Fitr essentially signifies the spirit of peace and harmony and caring for the less-endowed, things in particular short supply in these troubled times with many countries suffering the ravages of war, insurgency, militancy, hatred, animosity and natural calamities. Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed or maimed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan where bombs go off on a regular basis. Suicidal blasts and killings have become part and parcel of the day to day life of people in Palestinian territories, Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan’s Darfur, Sri Lanka, Somalia and certain regions in the Philippines. The world leaders have been talking about peace between Israel and the Palestinian people for several years, but no tangible result has been achieved to end one of the longest conflicts in history.

The Sudanese government has turned a Nelson’s eye towards the manslaughter in the oppressed and neglected province of Darfur where over 200,000 people have lost their lives in the last five years or so and over 2.5m people have become homeless, triggering refugee problems in neighbouring countries. Ruthless militants are creating havoc in many countries, including India, Pakistan and some of the European countries.

While its is easy to blame politicians for most of the people’s misery, we easily forget our own lack of sensitivity to sufferings around us. Let us, on this auspicious day of Eid, take a solemn pledge to live by the tenets of peace, harmony and universal brotherhood.
