Ask The Doctor: Regulate eating pattern during Ramadan (The Peninsula)
How can I prevent acidity during and after the fasting period of Ramadan? Are there any antacids that have long lasting effect available in the market?
Hyperacidity is quite common during Ramadan due to erratic food habits. People tend to eat more of fatty and spicy foods, drink a lot of citrus fruit juices like orange and ten to fill the stomach to its full capacity. All of these contribute to hyperacidity. Therefore, avoidance of all these precipitating factors helps prevent abdominal discomfort and hyperacidity in most people. Avoidance of excessive coffee and smoking will also help. Several drugs are available for reducing hyperacidity. H2-Receptor Blockers and Proton-Pump Inhibitors are the main courses of treatment
I have been taking a famous brand of multivitamin pills once a day for the last several months, after my doctor prescribed them for general weakness. Should I continue them in Ramadan since I will be fasting the whole day and most food intake is in the evening, unlike on regular days when I have lighter meals at night?
A mixed diet consisting of adequate cereals, vegetables and fruits contains most of the vitamins required by the body and supplemental vitamins in the form of tablets or syrups are not necessary. If you wish to continue them, there is no harm in doing so.

Is it advisable to reduce the intake of meat during Ramadan, since heavy food might cause me sleeplessness at night? Also, it is advisable to avoid dairy products during this period?
First and foremost, in view of Ramadan, we need to regulate our eating patterns. We tend to overeat. Considering fasting hours, this should be avoided. Also make sure you have your dinner at least two hours before you sleep. Intake of meat can be maintained the same as in regular periods, as it does not have any direct effect on sleeplessness. Rather, all depends on the quantity of low fatty meal you are eating. Avoid cheese and fatty dairy products but normal intake of milk and yoghurt will not cause any harm.
What is the best way to remain fresh and energetic in Ramadan, during the fasting hours? I generally feel tired and sleepy after a couple of hours of hectic work every morning. Should I have more coffee before starting the fast?
Try and maintain a balanced diet during non-fasting hours consisting of green salads, vegetables such as spinach, tomatoes and potatoes, fresh fruits and drink plenty of water as it has all the required electrolytes to keep yourself fresh and energetic. Try to get a good nightيs sleep of six to eight hours before you start work. Avoid as much as possible, direct contact with sun or use protection if unavoidable. It is a wrong conception that drinking more coffee is going to keep you awake the full day ahead. Instead, it is the sleep routine that you should accustom your body to.
