iftar

NEARLY 5,000 people from all walks of life and various faiths participated in a mass Iftar hosted by the Qatar Indian Islahi Centre (QIIC) at the government school near Doha Stadium at Old Salata yesterday.

The event was conducted under the leadership of Abdulrauf Madani. QIIC advisory board chairman Ahmed Ansari led the prayer. The Ramadan message was given by a visiting leader of the Indian Union Muslim League, Jaffar Atholi.

“All the food items were prepared by a team of about 100 volunteers while another group of nearly 500 volunteers looked after the other arrangements,” a spokesperson said.

The event also featured a presentation on traffic safety regulations by a team of senior officials from the Traffic Department.

Speaking before the presentation, Traffic and Patrol Department director Col Mohamed Saad al-Kharji lauded the opportunity provided by the QIIC to get the message across to the Indian community, which accounts for the second largest number of road fatalities after Qataris.

Traffic Studies and Information Section director Lt Col Bakhit Fahd al-Doussari gave the multimedia presentation that included important traffic safety rules, violations and penalties.

The presentation in Arabic was simultaneously translated into Malayalam by Abdul Latheef Madani. Traffic Department assistant director (technical affairs) Col Mohamed Abdulla al-Malki was also present.

The occasion also saw QIIC’s youth wing Focus Qatar receiving donations of blankets and cash for earthquake victims in Kashmir, the spokesperson added.
