Mile-long snarl-up on D Ring Road

Doha: The D Ring Road and Najma signal intersection witnessed unprecedented traffic jams yesterday evening as pre-Ramadan shoppers came out in full force to buy provisions using narrow diversions caused by the partial closure of the Airport Roundabout and Al Mana traffic junction early on Friday.

The traffic was literally bumper-to-bumper from the Airport R/A to The Mall and at the Najma signal. It took motorists, caught in the melee, 30 minutes to an hour to get out. “This kind of jam was not unexpected especially as the arterial roads are partially closed for major development work and Ramadan is on its way,” Col Mohamed Saad Al Kharji, head of traffic department, told The Peninsula.

The Minister of State for Interior Affairs, H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, will be meeting today with top traffic and Public Works Authority officials to see how such traffic jams can be avoided during Ramadan
