Doha: Several private companies covered by the labour law are not following the rule regarding reduced working hours for its Muslim as well as non-Muslim employees during Ramadan.

One contracting company, which has lodging facility for its over 150 employees in the Industrial Area, has put up a notice specifying separate working hours for Muslim and non-Muslim staff.

For their site work, the company has asked Muslim workers to report for duty from 7.30am until 1.30pm, while non-Muslims have been asked to work in two shifts: from 7.30am till 12 noon and from 12.30 pm until 3.30pm.

Muslim staff of their main office have been asked to do a straight six-hour shift, from 8am until 2pm, while non-Muslims are required to work in two shifts: from 8am until 12 noon and from 12.30pm until 3.30pm.

The notice dated October 3, 2005 has been signed by the company’s human resources manager as well as administration and finance manager.

The labour law clearly specifies that the rule of reduced working hours of six is applicable to both Muslim and non-Muslim workers of all private companies that are covered by the law.

There are some hypermarkets where it is alleged that even Muslim employees are forced to work for about 10 hours a day.

When this issue was brought to the notice of a labour official, he said it was actually the duty of labour inspectors to conduct inspections on companies during Ramadan.

The official said if a company was found flouting Ramadan timings rule, it is to be fined QR2,000 in respect of each worker.

He said in case a worker files a complaint against a company, he is given a notice addressed to the management asking it not to violate the rule. The identity of a complaining worker does not remain a secret, he implied.
