geheime rijken

Doha • There are more millionaires in the Arab world than ever before due to consistently high oil prices in the global markets and the booming economies of the oil exporting countries, reports Al Sharq quoting Arabian Business, a prominent magazine.

But, ironically, the richest Arab, Carlos Salim Al Hula, 67, is not based in the region. He is a Mexican of Lebanese origin and dominates the telecom industry of Mexico. Prince Walid bin Talal of Saudi Arabia is the second richest Arab and he is worth $28bn. Arabian Business issued a list of 50 richest Arab individuals and business groups and their combined wealth was estimated at $238.46bn.

Saudi Arabia's famous Bin Laden Group is ranked several rungs down on the list and above it are Saudi Arabia's Al Rajhi group (third richest Arab business group). The Hariri family of Lebanon, Kuwait's Nasser Al Kharafi and the UAE's Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair also figure on the list.

Al Sharq quoted R Seetharaman, from Doha Bank, as saying that the number of millionaires was on the rise in Qatar due to the economic boom.
He, however, gave no details saying exact figures were not available.
“The list is a top secret within Qatar's financial circles," Qassem Mohamed Qassem, a prominent banker, told the daily.

GL: hoeveel leden van de familie van de Emir op deze geheime lijst staan blijft dus nog (even) een staatsgeheim.
