I ran into this story when I reshuffled some stats in my archive. Hintnaus.
Tom Hintnaus, the first Calvin Klein underwear model. Tom who? Tom Hintnaus former south american and brazilian recordholder in pole vault.
Klein first introduced the iconic image of a very tanned Hintnaus in white briefs against a whitewashed wall on the Greek island of Santorini in 1982. The photograph by Bruce Weber is world wide known but at the time was considered scandalous, was plastered against the side of a building in New York's Times Square and stopped traffic. It has been cited by American Photographer magazine as one of "10 Pictures That Changed America."
Son of Czech immigrants (who escaped from Czechoslovakia in 1948) who lived in the United States. So Hintnaus qualified first in the United States Olympic Trials but following the 1980 US Olympic boycott Hintnaus became estranged and represented Brazil instead, from 1983. I remember the strange name and this history when he competed in the first world chmpionships in Helsinki. Hintnaus ranking there is still the best for Brazil in pole vault men when he came fifth. His personal best was came two years later in the famous Zurich meet where he cleared 5.76 metres.
Now Hintnaus is a contractor in Hawaii. "I'm still in shape," he told the Times couple of years ago. "Maybe they'll bring me back for an old guy campaign." Once a sport always a sport.
