A collection of 16 paintings were showcased to the public last night at the Doha Grand Hyatt Hotel during the launching of the exhibit “The Colours of Qatar.”

Dutch artist Linda Nijenbandring de Boer showed the public paintings of horses that seem to be leaping off the canvas with a very mysterious rider, women looking elegant in their abayas, the regal stance of the oryx showed to perfection, the trunks of palm trees, Bedouins riding camels, sailing dhows — and colours… lots and lots of colours.

De Boer, who was commissioned to produce 260 paintings and murals by the Doha Grand Hyatt Hotel, said she wanted to put colours to the ubiquitous things in the country.

“I used colours in everything… this is my own interpretation of the things I see daily in the country, which I’m very fascinated with, like the ladies in abayas, the dhows, even the palm trees… I used colours in the palm trees and even the landscape.”

De Boer, who mentioned she started getting interested in art since she was a child, said she worked on the Arab-oriented collection for a month. Some, she said, were done a few weeks ago. “This is like an overview of what I had been doing for the last few years… and this will be my last exhibit before I leave for vacation.”

She said she used acrylic as the medium of her work. “They’re fast and easy to dry. With the temperature here, it’s hard to paint in oil.”

De Boer has exhibited her works a number of times here and in other areas in the region. She recently exhibited her works in Oman and will soon exhibit some of her works in Dubai in August
