Mid-day work ban at sites in force
Many construction sites in Doha yesterday began complying with the government’s directive not to make labourers work for more than five hours in the morning shift until August 31.
The Labour Ministry order on summer working hours states that the morning shift should not go beyond 11.30am and that the afternoon shift should start only after 3pm. Non-compliance may lead to penal action against defaulters.
However, construction activities were witnessed at some sites even at 12.45pm with no sign of a break.
Those laying ground cables for contractors executing electrical works are facing certain problems in following the government order, according to sources. Since it is difficult to lay cables in the evening hours because of poor visibility, workers are forced to do all digging and laying works before noon, thereby exceeding the five-hour morning limit in a few locations.
Workers want the Labour Department officials to make surprise inspections at sites. However, inspections are seldom carried out in the areas beyond the city limits, pointed out labourers at a site in Umm Salal Mohamed.
